Mission, Position, and Mandate

Our Mission

The Hearing Foundation of Canada (THFC) is committed to eliminating the devastating effects of hearing loss on the quality of life of Canadians, particularly youth, by promoting prevention, early diagnosis, leading-edge medical research and successful intervention.

Our Position
  • We believe that communication is the foundation of all human relationships. Hearing loss can have a devastating impact on communication, language development, education, employment and personal safety.
  • We believe that we should share information on how to prevent hearing loss with every Canadian to allow them to make informed decisions about protection and treatment.
  • We believe that the earliest possible screening, detection and intervention techniques will give everyone with hearing loss the best opportunities to integrate into and succeed in society.
  • We believe that, in the short term, medical research will lead to new or improved diagnostic and intervention techniques and treatments, and in the longer term, to restoration or reversal of some forms of hearing loss.
  • We believe that medical research and prevention-focused education programs, funded today, will save millions of future tax dollars in health care and social assistance costs.

Our Mandate

We are committed to the early detection of hearing loss, helping Canadians protect themselves from hearing loss, and supporting medical research that improves detection and treatment of hearing loss.

We make a difference in the lives of many Canadians by:
  • Providing grants to Canadian researchers to conduct clinical and biological medical research in hearing-related fields
  • Educating the public about how to detect and prevent hearing loss
  • Advocating to raise awareness of hearing-related issues with governments, media, and the public.
